About

Gay Hostal Puerta Del Sol Madrid

Gay Hostal Puerta Del Sol Madrid occupies the fourth floor of a historic building on Plaza Puerta del Sol, right at Madrid's geographic and social centre. The 17-room guest house is a straightforward, budget-minded base: rooms are simple but clean, and the common areas and breakfast table tend to spark conversation among travellers from around the world.

The property is proudly gay-friendly and has built a loyal following — several reviews mention repeat visits. Staff, particularly Radek and Alina, are repeatedly singled out as warm and helpful. With high-speed WiFi, free tea and coffee around the clock, and a terrace on the top floor, it's a functional stay with more personality than most hostals in the area.

In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

3 reasons to book
  • Unbeatable location on Puerta del Sol — The hostal sits right on Madrid's central square, with most sights within walking distance. Guests consistently describe the location as 'perfect' and 'superb'.
  • Warm, repeat-guest atmosphere — The social vibe is a big draw — guests chat over breakfast and in common areas, and many return for a second or third stay. Staff are called out by name for being helpful.
  • Good value for the centre — Rooms are modest but clean, with free WiFi, tea and coffee, and breakfast included in the rate. Several guests note it's a fair price for such a central location.

Worth weighing

3 to weigh
  • Noise from thin walls and the square — One guest warned that walls are 'tissue thin' and you can hear neighbours, and the bed itself creaked. The central location also means street noise from Puerta del Sol, especially in square-facing rooms.
  • Basic breakfast and showers — Breakfast is described as 'basic' or 'okay' by more than one guest, and a couple found the shower pressure or setup lacking. It's fine for the price, but don't expect a spread.
  • No guests allowed in rooms — One reviewer noted that visitors are not permitted in guest rooms. If you plan to have a friend over, double-check the policy before booking.

“I really liked the hotel a lot; I felt very safe and calm. The location is excellent, the staff are superb, and the cleanliness is very good.”

7.2Verified guest

“We were on the top floor and it felt like a beach house in summer. Big rooms, very quiet and intimate. There are people from all over the world, and at breakfast you get to chat with them. Fantastic.”

7.2Verified guest

“Staying here was really nice. The hotel is very friendly and we appreciated the atmosphere. Many thanks to the helpful staff, especially Radek and Alina. The location is very convenient — you can walk to the main sights of Madrid. Breakfast was fine too.”

7.2Verified guest

“Very nice hostel for budget travellers — excellent location, friendly and helpful staff, rooms modest but very clean, breakfast okay.”

7.2Verified guest

“The hostal was very well located and the staff super friendly. The room was large, and the bed comfortable but noisy. A better shower would have been great. The breakfast didn't look appealing so we skipped it for all three days. It's worth paying a bit more for a top-floor room with access to the terrace, which is fabulous. If you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs — the walls are paper-thin and you can hear everything from neighbouring rooms and bathrooms. All in all, good value for the location.”

“Friendly staff in a historic building, very gay!”
